Conversion of EPSG:3857 coordinate to UTM

I'm trying to convert coordinates from Google Maps using PostGIS.

I'm using this query:

SELECT ST_AsText(ST_Transform(ST_GeomFromText('POINT(-29.16297 -51.1795034)', 900913), 29182));

The problem is that when I put a point on the map using the UTM coordinates, it is in a different place.

Is there a chance of one of these SRIDs be wrong?

Your input coordinates look as lat/long or long/lat coordinates, so you should use 4326 instead of 900913:

The input on that case should be POINT(long lat).

Use ST_MakePoint and the geography type. Google Maps exports in 4326, which is the default SRID for Geography

This is probably Spherical Mercator, the web mapping system used by Google amongst others. There's a clue in that the UTM conversion works in one axis, which means it's probably an easting northing type system with an origin on the equator.

You can use EPSG:900913 or EPSG:3857 to convert it.

Here's an example in Python using pyproj

It's a surprising choice as this system tends to be looked down upon by professional cartographers (take a look at the history of the EPSG code 900913 for details).

It looks close enough to be in the same city, which is hopefully what you've used as your rough estimate for the co-ordinates.

The Google projection is a Mercator projection that pretends to be defined on the WGS84 datum, but actually ignores the ellipsoidal nature of that datum and uses the simpler spherical formulas instead. Since version 6.15 of EPSG geodetic dataset, the preferred way to get that projection is to invoke CRS.forCode("EPSG:3857") . Note that the use of that projection is not recommended, unless needed for compatibility with other data.
